Game 1: Seton Hall 11, Providence 1
How it Happened
- Despite getting no-hit, the Friars were still able to push one run across. That run came in the first inning as Providence got out to an early lead.
- The Pirates would bounce back in the third to take the lead. Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) tied things up with an RBI double, followed by a Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) two-run home run to give Seton Hall a 3-1 lead.
- The Pirates put four runs up in the fifth and sixth innings to salt the game away. In the fifth, Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) broke the game open with a three-run homer to make it a 6-1 game. Next, Smith would follow that up with a home run of her own as the two went back-to-back to make it 7-1.
- After the Pirates plated four more in the sixth, Smith took the circle three outs away from a no-hitter. The senior cruised through the inning, setting down the side in order to finish the game.
- Smith's no-hitter is the 21st in program history and the first since Ashley Forsyth's perfect game on April 8, 2010.
- Smith's lone run allowed was unearned and she struck out eight batters on the day.
- In addition to the no-hitter, Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBI.
- Hill picked up two hits on the game to reach 100 base hits on her career.
- Carr drove in four runs and her home run was her ninth of the season.
- Allen collected three hits on the day, her third three hit game over the last week.
How it Happened
- Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) got the scoring started in the second with a solo home run.
- In the third, Carr kept her hot streak at the plate going with an RBI single to make it a 2-0 Pirates lead.
- After a sacrifice fly in the fourth made it a 3-1 game, the Pirates erupted for six runs in the fifth. After Alexander was hit by a pitch to score a run, Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) and Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.)Â hit back-to-back two-run doubles to make it 8-1. Carr would cap the inning with a bases loaded walk to make it a 9-1 game.
- Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) was strong again in the circle, allowing just three runs over seven innings of work and striking out four.
- The win gives the Pirates their fourth consecutive BIG EAST series sweep and their 12th straight conference victory.
- Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) extended her hitting streak to 16 games, matching Yasmin Harrell's program record.
- Alexander's home run was her first of the season.
