Carr K's 11, Gilbert Homers in Sunday Split at UConn
3/12/2023 7:29:00 PM | Softball
Game 1: Seton Hall 3, UConn 1
How it Happened
- Carr escaped multiple jams throughout her outing as the Huskies stranded 12 runners on base on the afternoon.
- The first threat in which Carr found her way out of came in the second inning, where UConn had runners on second and third with nobody out. Carr proceeded to strike out each of the next three batters to keep the Huskies off the board.
- The Pirates would reward Carr's pitching with run support in the top of the third, as Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) worked a walk and came around to score on three wild pitches to make it a 1-0 game.
- UConn got the first two batters on base once again in the fourth, again threatening to crack the scoreboard. However, Carr had other ideas, forcing a popout, strikeout and groundout to strand two more Huskies on the basepaths.
- In the sixth, Seton Hall would add some insurance which proved to be the difference in the game. Gilbert launched her second home run of the year over the fence in left field to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
- UConn managed to get one run back in the sixth as Taylor Zatyk singled home a run to make it a 3-1 game.
- After not hitting a home run until the final day of the regular season last year, Gilbert already has two homers in her first 16 games of 2023.
- Carr's 11 strikeouts are a new career-high and marks the fourth time this season in which a Pirate pitcher has recorded double digit strikeouts.
- Despite the three runs, the Pirates were outhit, 6-4.
How it Happened
- After falling behind by a run in the first, the Pirates responded with two of their own in the second to take the lead. Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) displayed great patience in working a bases loaded walk to tie the game before Colonnetta reached on a fielder's choice to give The Hall the lead.
- UConn retook the lead in the fourth on a two-run double, but the Pirates once again bounced back and tied the game after Carr roped a double off the wall in left centerfield to make it a 3-3 game.
- The Pirates tacked on more runs in the sixth after Perez reached on an error by her counterpart at shortstop, followed later by a bases loaded walk by Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) to bring the Seton Hall lead to 5-3.
- UConn was able to rally in the bottom of the sixth for eight runs to take the lead for good.
- Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) collected two hits on the day for her fifth multi-hit game of the season.
- Perez notched her first multi-RBI game of her career.
- All six of the Pirates' hits came from the top five batters in their order.
Seton Hall returns home for a midweek doubleheader against Manhattan on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
