    ACADEMIC CENTER VIRTUAL TOUR

On Thursday, December 12, 2013, Seton Hall Athletics hosted a dedication ceremony for the newly opened Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence.

The completely remodeled space features two group meeting rooms, two private tutoring areas, a set of study lounges and offices for the academic support staff as well as the director of student-athlete development.

The renovation process also more than doubled the size of the previous space dedicated to academic support and is lined with modern furniture as well as branded plaques with inscriptions honoring past Seton Hall athletic and academic award winners.

"As long as I have been here; academics have always been a major point of emphasis but I think the construction of this space signifies our desire to reach new heights ..." said Director of Academic Support Services Matt Geibel when the space opened in early November.

A proud alumnus and member of the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame, Charles "Chuck" W. Doehler spent time as the coach of the freshman baseball team at The Hall but his most significant contributions were borne out of his tireless efforts to support student-athletes of all sports both on and off the field, making his a simple choice as the name to adorn the walls of the brand-new facility.

"The academic center is such an important place for our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics and Recreational Services Patrick Lyons at Thursday's ceremony. "This houses where their academic goals are met, our Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders (H.A.L.L.) Program runs out of this center; all of the things that we are trying to do for our athletes are directed out this office. It is the place that our athletes visit the most...so we needed to make sure whoever we named it after embodied what this space truly stands for."

"We think we have hit a home run with this space," he continued. "It represents all the things that Chuck stood for and will certainly honor his legacy in a fitting manner. I would like to thank his family for allowing us to have Chuck at Seton Hall for so long and now to continue with his name as we move towards a future where student-athletes will benefit from the Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence."

"As student-athletes here at Seton Hall, we take a lot of pride in setting a standard of academic success," added Joey Lacus, Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) President and a senior co-captain of the men's swimming & diving team. "This new space will allow us to better prepare academically while balancing our athletic pursuits. As a group, we would like to extend our gratitude to our donors and supporters for their continued dedication to Seton Hall Athletics."

The Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence is yet another by-product of the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund's ongoing Pride & Excellence Campaign which has already yielded several other completed projects; highlighted by the scoreboard at Owen T. Carroll Field and state-of-the-art Center for Sports Medicine. An extensive re-shaping of the recreation center is also nearly complete and projects in development include new locker room facilities for all of Seton Hall's Olympic sports, a committed space for the Seton Hall Athletic Hall of Fame and enhancements to Historic Walsh Gymnasium.

"We remain committed to providing the young men and women who choose to represent Seton Hall with the resources necessary to compete both athletically and in their professional endeavors," said Bryan Felt, Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Development. "This center stands as a shining example of a unified effort between the University, Athletics and our loyal supporters to enhance the student-athlete experience at Seton Hall; honoring a mission that Chuck Doehler believed strongly in and worked hard to make a reality. We came to a consensus that there is no more appropriate name to be attached with this facility and we look forward to continuing to work to further this vision."
