NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Teammate D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) was added to the conference's Weekly Honor Roll.
On Friday at #22 Arizona, senior Josh Prevost turned in his third consecutive outstanding start to begin the 2014 season. The towering 6-foot-8 right-hander set the tone for the weekend for Seton Hall, pitching eight innings and giving up just one earned run to improve his record to 3-0. Prevost also struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. He shut down a powerful Wildcat offense that entered the series with a .359 team batting average. The two longest outings of Prevost's career have now been his last two starts. This is the third consecutive week Prevost's performance has been recognized with a BIG EAST weekly award and the second time he's been named Pitcher of the Week.
Ruhlman led a Seton Hall offense that out-scored #22 Arizona, 24-to-5, in a three-game series sweep. The starting shortstop batted .462 with four runs scored and three stolen bases. Although he played well in all three games, Ruhlman took his game to another level on Sunday. In the Pirates' 11-2 victory in the series finale, he went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, a triple and his team-leading sixth stolen base of the season. It's the first time in Ruhlman's collegiate career that he's been recognized with a BIG EAST weekly award.
Xavier's Vinny Nittoli was named Player of the Week. Those joining Ruhlman on the Honor Roll include: St. John's Robert Wayman, Xavier's Scott Klever and both Brad McKewon and Matt Warren of Creighton.
Weather and field conditions permitting, the Pirates will return to action on Wednesday, March 5 for a mid-week contest at in-state rival Rutgers. First pitch in Piscataway is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
