DeSTASO DOES IT ALL
Freshman Danielle DeStaso contributed in all facets of the game in the Pirates sweep over Saint Peter's on Tuesday. In game one, she won her third straight decision after pitching seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball. In game two, she hit her team-leading fourth home run and got SHU out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh inning to earn her first career save.
HAMMER POUNDS PEAHENS
Junior Brittany Hammer set a new single-game record recording three doubles in game two against Saint Peter's on Wednesday. She also went 4-for-4 in the game, becoming the 12th player to tie the program-high.
KAELIN'S BIG WEEK
Senior Kristen Kaelin doubled her RBI total in the span of the week after driving in 10 runs to help the Pirates go 4-3 against Towson and the Strike Out Cancer Tournament. The first baseman leads the team in the category and is four shy of becoming just the fourth player in school history to knock in 100 runs.
FAB FROSH
The duo of freshmen Danielle DeStaso and Casey Moses have stepped up for SHU with the absence of No. 1 starter Jen Metzger to injury. Moses has racked up four victories and a 1.77 ERA in 35.2 innings, while DeStaso has fanned 48 batters in 48.2 innings of work and has won her last three decisions.
MEET THE METZ
Sophomore Jen Metzger contributed in all three SHU wins at the UNLV Eller Media Classic, posting a 2-0 record with a save while not giving up a run in 15.2 innings of work. For her efforts, she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Mar. 5.
TOP DAWGS
The Pirates successfully defended their Dawg Pound Classic for the third time after going 3-1 last weekend. SHU won the tournament in 2009 and last year in 2011. The tourney was completely rained out in the 2010 season.
BACK-TO-BACK 1-0 WINS
With a pair of 1-0 wins against New Mexico State and Illinois on Saturday, the Pirates became the first squad to win by that margin in back-to-back contests in program history.
LET'S TURN TWO
For the second straight season, the Pirats have shown an uncanny knack for turning double-plays. Their average of 0.45 turns per game topped the BIG EAST and ranked them among the nation's leaders. This season, SHU is averaging 0.44 DP's and ranks 27th in the nation.
COMEBACK KIDS
The Pirates had to come-from-behind in each of their first three victories this season. SHU's largest deficit they have overcome was a two-run deficit to St. John's in the season opener.
HAMMER TIME
junior Brittany Hammer led the team with a .357 batting average and five RBI at the UCF & Courtyard by Marriott Tournament. Her four RBI performance against Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday set a new career-high.
ACCESS DENIED
Senior Nicole Loewenstein is proving she is one of the top catchers in the conference, throwing out seven would-be base-stealers and picking off another to rank among the BIG EAST leaders in both categories.
DESTASO DELIGHTS IN OPENING WEEKEND
Freshman Danielle DeStaso made an immediate impact during her opening weekend, hitting .556 with two homers and five RBI at the Lancer Leadoff Tournament. She also made her pitching debut, striking out six batters in five innings of relief against St. John's. For her efforts, she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 20.
