Senior Elizabeth Verow and the Pirates made their first BIG EAST Championship appearance in five years.
Tennis Season Ends With 4-0 Loss to # 9 Cincinnati in BIG EAST Championship Consolation
TAMPA, FLA. - After falling in their opening round match against fifth-seeded Georgetown, the Seton Hall tennis team came up short in an elimination match against #9 Cincinnati, losing 4-0 on Friday.

Against Cincinnati, the Pirates fell behind early once again after failing to capture the doubles point for the second consecutive day. UC clinched the point with wins at number one and number two before the third match could be completed.

Entering singles play, the Pirates were faced with an uphill battle, needing to win four out of six singles matches to advance.

The Bearcats took the result in the first three matches to be completed, and with the team result decided, all other matches were suspended.

The first of Cincy's three wins came at #5 singles where Safiyya Ismail ousted freshman Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia), 6-3, 6-1.

Ashleigh Witte scored next for Cincinnati; defeating senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green England) in the number three singles slot, 6-3, 6-1.

A 6-2, 6-1 win by Kristina Georgieva over sophomore Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) in the second position clinched the match for UC.

Freshman Maria Rodriguez (Bogotá, Colombia) had built a sizeable 6-1, 4-1 advantage over Carly Wilson in #6 singles when play was stopped.

SHU's top player, Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong), faced a one-set deficit against Jasmine Lee in the first singles position but was up a break, 2-1, in the second set.

Junior Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) was shut out in the first set of her #4 singles match against Sierra Sullivan, but had played to a 3-3 draw in the second.

The Pirates end the season with a 7-16 record and return to South Orange after finishing in a tie for 11th place at the conference championship.

Verow and fellow senior Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) capped their Pirate careers by helping SHU to its first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship since 2006-07.
