SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seton Hall sophomore swimmer Kevin Webster (Leawood, Kan.) earned Male Athlete of the Year honors while junior volleyball player Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) and senior track star Clarisse Moh (Paris, France) were named Female Co-Athletes of the Year at the annual Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) awards banquet, held Monday evening on the Seton Hall University campus.  Seton Hall also honored seniors Terrance Gallogly (Providence, R.I.) of the track team and Kim Schweitzer (Syracuse, N.Y.) of the softball team with awards as Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Webster dominated in the pool on his way to 23 first place finishes.  Named BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week on November 2, he broke the conference record in the 200-yard individual medley at the USA Short Course Nationals.  As his personal records fell, Webster set Seton Hall records in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley and was a part of relay teams that broke school records in the 200 and 800-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley.

Matters is one of the greatest volleyball players in Seton Hall history and she still has a year remaining.  A Second Team All-BIG EAST selection, her 576 digs set Seton Hall’s single-season record.  Her 5.1 digs per set led the BIG EAST and she became only the fourth player in conference history to record double-digit digs in every BIG EAST game.  A BIG EAST Honor Roll selection on Sept. 1, Matters currently ranks second all-time at Seton Hall with over 1,300 career digs.

Moh has dominated on the track for the Pirates, winning the 800-meter run and placing third in the 500-meter run at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship.  A member of the BIG EAST Champion 4x400-meter relay team that placed 12th nationally, she recently qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Regionals in the 800-meter run.  A qualifier in the 400-meter dash in the ECAC Outdoor Championships, Moh competed this past weekend in the prestigious Penn Relays.

Gallogly consistently earned academic accolades in his time as a Pirate, including Big East Academic All-Star, Seton Hall’s freshman scholar athlete and Dean’s List, and he was also Seton Hall’s male nomination for the Big East Scholar Athlete.   He plans to continue his education next year in law school.

An elementary and special education major, Schweitzer has been a consistent member of the Seton Hall Dean’s List, Academic All Star Team and Big East Academic All Star Team and was Seton Hall’s nomination for the Big East Scholar Athlete award, for which she has earned a scholarship for future graduate studies.

In addition to the Athlete of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year awards, Seton Hall also recognized its male and female Athletes of the Year for each class at the banquet.

Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) was named Senior Male Athlete of the Year after serving as the baseball team’s most consistent hitter all season long.  The Pirates leader in batting average, runs, hits, triples and total bases, he has played an errorless center field through 36 games this season.  A member of the BIG EAST/BIG TEN All-Tournament Team, Smedberg was named Most Valuable Player of the Rawling Strikeout Cancer Tournament.  His 13 strikeouts are the fewest of any regular starter on the team.

Track’s Alexandra McCoy (Goldsboro, N.C.) and basketball’s Noteisha Womack (Washington, D.C.) earned Senior Female Co-Athlete of the Year honors.  McCoy, a 500-meter specialist, won the event at both the Metropolitan and BIG EAST Indoor Championships.  A member of the BIG EAST Champion 4x400-meter relay team that placed 12th nationally, she has qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run.  McCoy, a recent particpant at the Penn Relays, is also a member of the 4x400-meter relay squad that qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  Womack is one of the greatest frontcourt women’s basketball players in recent memory.  A Second Team All-BIG EAST selection, she ranked amongst the national leaders in rebounding for most of the season.  Womackl, a three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll member, averaged a double-double with 12.4 points and a conference-leading 10.6 rebounds per game and was named to SHU Classic All-Tournament team in November.

Sean Black (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) was named the Junior Male Athlete of the Year.  Sporting a sub-four ERA and a team-leading 57 strikeouts, he received BIG EAST/BIG TEN All-Tournament Team honors and was an honorable mention for the Rawlings Strikeout Cancer Tournament.  Most recently, Black threw eight innings of shut out baseball while striking out six in a 2-0  victory over Georgetown on Friday.

Jernail Hayes (Newark, Del.) earned the Junior Female Athlete of the Year award.  A winner at the Metropolitan Championships in the 200-meter dash, she was the runner-up in the same event at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships while setting an NCAA Provisional time.  Hayes, a member of the BIG EAST Champion 4x400-meter relay team that placed 12th nationally this winter, qualified for several BIG EAST, ECAC and NCAA events this outdoor season.

The Sophomore Male Co-Athletes of the Year are track’s Chris Cox (Manahawkin, N.J.) and basketball’s Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.).  A winner in the 200 and 400 meter dashes at the Metropolitan Championships, Cox was the BIG EAST Indoor Champion of the 500-meter dash and ran a leg for Seton Hall’s BIG EAST Championship 4x400 meter relay team.    A qualifier for the BIG EAST and IC4A Outdoor Championships, he most recently competed at the prestigious Penn Relays this past weekend.  Hazell had one of the greatest offensive basketball seasons in Seton Hall history.  A BIG EAST Third Team and All-Met First Team selection, he averaged a conference second-best 22.7 points per game and set single-season school records for three-pointers made and attempted.  He became the 37th player to record 1,000 career points and is only the fifth player in Pirates history to achieve the milestone in less than two full seasons.

Michelle Reed (Wrightstown, N.J.) picked up the Sophomore Female Athlete of the Year Award.  Seton Hall’s leadoff hitter, she broke the Pirates all-time single-season steals record and currently leads the BIG EAST with 26 steals.  Reed, a starter in all 53 games, is hitting a team second-best .319 and leads the Pirates with 36 runs scored.  Named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on April 13, she has made only 1 error in 65 chances in right field.

Golf’s Troy Spencer (High Point, N.C.) is the Freshman Male Athlete of the Year.  A starter in all 11 tournaments this year, he was named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week following his 1-over-par, fifth place finish at the Towson University Invitational.  Spencer recorded three top-5 finishes this year and led the team in stroke average in the fall.  In his first-ever BIG EAST Championship, he shot 3-over-par to tie for 12th among all individual golfers and helped guide the Pirates to a third place team finish.

Basketball’s Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) and softball’s Kristen Kaelin (Parlin, N.J.) are the Freshman Female Co-Athletes of the Year.  Green made 17 starts and was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team after earning the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week award three times.  She finished 10th in the conference with six double-doubles and led the team in rebounding nine times and averaged 6.6 per game to rank 19th in the BIG EAST.  Seton Hall’s clean-up hitter, Kaelin leads the team with a .321 batting average and ranks second with five home runs and 28 RBIs.  She has 11 multi-hit games on the season and hit her first career home run in Seton Hall’s upset victory over #14 Louisville.  A regular starter, she tied a Pirates single-game record with four hits vs. Fairleigh Dickinson.
