CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Junior Sean Black (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) (1-1) struck out four batters over 4.2 innings of work allowing two runs on four hits, however it would not be enough as Seton Hall fell to #2 North Carolina, 5-1, in game one of the double-header Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill.

After North Carolina grabbed the early, 2-0, lead in the bottom of the second inning on a lead-off home run by Garret Gore and an RBI double by Ryan Graepel, the Pirates cut the lead in half in the top of the third.

Junior Chris Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Michael Rogers (Portland, Ore.).  With one-out Fontenelli moved to third base on a wild pitch and came in to score on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ed Brown (Edison, N.J.).

With the Pirates trailing, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tar Heels would threaten to score the go-ahead run.  After a two base error and a failed pick-off put Ben Bunting on third base with no-outs, Black struck out Tarron Robinson looking, got Graepel to pop-up to shortstop and induced a groundout to first base to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, North Carolina drew two walks to chase Black in favor of freshman Collin McGowan (Stratford, N.J.).  After a wild pitch had Tar Heel runners on second and third with two-outs, McGowan forced Mark Fleury to fly out to center field ending the threat.

North Carolina, however, would not be kept at bay in the sixth and seventh inning.  With Graepel on second base by way of a two-out walk and a McGowan balk, Cavasinni hit an RBI single to left field in the sixth inning for a, 3-1, lead.  In the seventh inning, Kyle Seager hit an RBI single and two batters later Fleury hit a sacrifice-fly giving North Carolina a, 5-1, advantage.

Sophomore Chris Spagnuolo (Tabernacle, N.J.) finished the game with two hits leading the Pirates’ offense.

Alex White (2-0) picked up the win after tossing 6.1 innings allowing one run on four hits striking out five.

The Pirates and Tar Heels will play game two of the double-header beginning at 6:00 p.m.
