Edwin tallied a team-high 14 points for Seton Hall (13-14, 2-12), reaching double-figures for the 13th time in the last 14 outings and for the 24th time in 2012-13. Sophomore Aaron Cosby (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in 11 points.
Cosby connected on his first three-point attempt, and minutes later, found a cutting Edwin for a smooth lefty layup to help the Pirates take an early lead. The backcourt duo combined to score seven of the next 10 points for The Hall as Edwin found Cosby on the break for a trey that put SHU on top 15-13 with 9:50 remaining before the half.
After two Edwin free-throws knotted the game at 17-17, Marquette shot ahead behind two inside buckets in quick succession prompting an SHU timeout. Out of the break, the Pirates' ball movement busted the MU zone and Edwin provided the final pass as Kyle Smyth (River Edge, N.J.) hit his second three-pointer of the half to pull the Pirates back to within one at 21-20. The Golden Eagles tallied the next six points but the Pirates responded with a flurry to end the half.
Trailing by seven with the ball and 47 seconds to play before halftime, SHU stopped the brief run as Edwin corralled his own miss and finished from under the bucket. On the ensuing possession, Haralds Karlis (Riga, Latvia) stole the ball from Marquette's Vander Blue, leading to Cosby's third transition three of the half. On what appeared to be the final possession before intermission, MU guard Derrick Wilson missed the front end of a one-and-one, but a foul was called on the rebound sending Seton Hall's Aaron Geramipoor (Manchester, England) to the line with one second on the clock. Geramipoor sank both freebies to send the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 27-27, the seventh tie of the period.
Prior to the Geramipoor free-throws, Cosby, Edwin and Smyth had accounted for all of Seton Hall's points. The Pirates scored seven of their points off 10 first half turnovers for the Golden Eagles, a team that entered the night averaging slightly over 12 giveaways per contest.
Freshman Tom Maayan (Galil, Israel) turned an Edwin steal into SHU's third layup of the opening minutes of the second half, giving The Hall a 33-32 edge with 17:50 to play. The lead was short-lived however as Marquette's Chris Otule answered with a put-back slam, sparking a stretch where the Golden Eagles scored 25 of the game's next 26 points to open up a decisive advantage.
Blue led all scorers with 19 points for Marquette (19-6, 10-3) who was also buoyed by 18 points and five rebounds from Davante Gardner.
The Golden Eagles controlled the boards on the night, out-rebounding the Pirates 43-24 resulting in a 16-to-5 advantage in second chance points.
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 when they travel to Louisville. Game-time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
