NOTRE DAME, IND. -Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) and Aaron Cosby (Louisville, Ky.) each scored 21 points, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell at Notre Dame, 93-74, on Saturday.
For Cosby it was his second straight strong offensive game, connecting on 5-of-9 three-point attempts. He also dished out a career-high seven assists. Gene Teague (Vineland, N.J.) had 17 points to go with a team-best nine rebounds.
Both teams applied good defensive pressure in the half court set early on. A three-point play by Notre Dame's Jack Cooley, followed by a jumper by Eric Atkins, gave the Irish an early 8-3 lead. But Edwin caught fire and scored seven straight points. His three-pointer from the corner game the Pirates a 10-8 lead with 14:07 left in the first half.
With the score tied at 15, Notre Dame scored five straight, but Teague responded with a three-point play to cut the Pirates deficit to 20-18 with 8:16 left in the half.
A three-pointer by Aaron Cosby again cut Notre Dame's lead to two, but the Fighting Irish went on a 10-2 run, capped by another three-point play by Cooley, to give them a 35-25 lead with 3:39 left before halftime.
A three-pointer by Haralds Karlis (Riga, Latvia) pulled Seton Hall to within three, 37-34, but Notre Dame finished the half on a 7-2 run and Eric Atkins' runner with four seconds left gave the Irish a 44-36 lead at the break.
Notre Dame (13-1, 1-0) shot a blistering 52.9% from the floor in the first half, compared to 44.1% for Seton Hall.
The Irish continued their hot shooting to start the second half. Four three-pointers by Notre Dame's Scott Martin in the half's first 5:07 fueled a 22-7 run, giving the Irish a commanding 66-43 lead.
Seton Hall (12-3, 1-1) would cut into the lead, but Edwin, Teague and Brandon Mobley (Savannah, Ga.) all picked up their fourth fouls with over 11 minutes remaining to hinder the comeback attempt.
Scott Martin led Notre Dame with 22 points.
The Pirates will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 9 when they return to the Prudential Center to host #4 Louisville. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm ET.
