2012 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship Bracket
TAMPA, FLA. - Playing in its first conference championship match since 2006-07, the #12 Seton Hall tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to the fifth-seeded Georgetown Hoyas Thursday afternoon.
SHU also came up short in its first match in 06-07, then rebounded to record wins over Cincinnati and Connecticut to return home with a 2-1 record.
Sophomore Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) had her bid for a second consecutive win over Georgetown's #1 singles player Lauren Greco cut short as play was stopped with Sher holding a commanding 6-2, 5-1 lead.
In doubles competition, Sher and her partner Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) had earned a 5-4 advantage against Greco and Kelly Comolli in the top slot when Georgetown clinched the doubles point.
Now, the Pirates (7-15) find themselves in a familiar position, again slated to meet Cincinnati in their first consolation match. Start-time is scheduled for later this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
Ninth-seeded UC (7-17) fell into the consolation round following a narrow 4-3 opening round defeat at the hands of #8 Rutgers in a drama-filled affair.
The Scarlet Knights scored first, taking two out of three doubles matches. As singles play began, Carly Wilson and Sierra Sullivan wrapped up wins for the Bearcats at the #6 and #4 singles position respectively, giving Cincy a 2-1 lead.
Cincinnati's Jasmine Lee then fell in three sets at number one, followed by a loss by Kristina Georgieva in the second position, but Sierra Sullivan scored by winning her #4 singles match to level the score at 3-3, with one match to be decided.
Ashleigh Witte, UC's singles wins leader, had been penciled in at her regular #3 spot and took the first set, 6-4, from Morgan Ivey. After playing to a 6-6 tie in the second frame, Ivey gritted out a win in a tiebreak that went to 15 points to even the match. Riding that momentum, she won the decisive set, 6-1, to push Rutgers into the quarterfinals.
Seton Hall and Cincinnati will be meeting for the first time this year. The teams last played on February 12, 2011 with Cincinnati taking a 7-0 victory on a neutral court in Syracuse, N.Y.
The winner will advance to play the winner of the other consolation match between Pittsburgh and St. John's in the ninth-place match on Saturday, April 21 at 3:00 p.m.
The losing teams from the aforementioned matches will be eliminated and finish in a tie for 11th place.
