Chloe Sher downed Fordham's top singles player Amy Simidian, the #16 player in the Northeast.
#73 Fordham Thwarts Upset Bid by Tennis; Edges Pirates, 4-3
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Seton Hall tennis team continued its run of strong play Wednesday afternoon, nearly knocking off #73 Fordham University in a hotly contested 4-3 affair.

Half of the Pirates' defeats in dual matches this season have come by just one point.

The sophomore pair of Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) posted another victory in #1 doubles, putting away the team of Angelika Dabu and Amy Simidian in the tiebreak to take a 8-7 (5) win.

Despite another win by their top duo, the Pirates were unable to secure the doubles point after falling in the number two and three slots and entered singles action needing four wins to take the match.

The teams split the first four matches that were decided, leaving the outcome in the balance with two more to be completed.

Freshmen Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) and Maria Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) scored victories for SHU in the number five and six slots respectively.

Shoemaker defeated Fordham junior Taylor Holt without dropping a single game and Rodriguez outdueled Rams newcomer Julie Leong in three sets, grinding out a 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 win.

Portela and Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) fell in straight sets in #2 and #4 singles play.

With the result in question, Sher and senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) were still in action for the Pirates.

After taking the first set 7-6 (4) from Bella Genkina in their #3 singles matchup, Verow narrowly missed earning the point, falling 6-7 (4) in the second frame. Genkina squeaked by the Pirate captain, 10-7 in the tiebreak to secure the match for Fordham.

Despite the fact that the team outcome had already been decided, Sher overcame a loss in the first set to oust Simidian, the 16th-ranked Division I player in the Northeast, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.

The Hall wraps up its spring break trip tomorrow morning when they take on Colgate. Start-time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
