Volleyball Plays St. John's and UConn in Final Home Weekend

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team will welcome St. John's and Connecticut to Walsh Gym this weekend for its final two home matches of the season. The  Pirates, who sit one-match behind the eighth place Huskies for the final BIG EAST Championship spot, will honor seniors Melissa Bellomy, Stacey Craighead, and Allie Matters prior to the match on Sunday.

SCOUTING THE RED STORM

St. John's picked up its second conference win of the season last Sunday against West Virginia, snapping an eight-match skid. The Red Storm is led by Darlene Ramdin, who averages a BIG EAST best, 4.47 kills per set. St. John's also has one of the BIG EAST's top distributors in Gabriela Petkova. Petkova hands out 10.13 assists per game, which ranks fifth in the league.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES

Connecticut dropped a pair of matches to Pittsburgh and West Virginia last weekend to even its BIG EAST record to 5-5. Rebecca Murray leads a balanced offensive attack, averaging 2.57 kills per set. Jessica Isaac is one of the top defensive players in the conference, posting 4.11 digs per set.

 

BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP STATUS

The Pirates sit in ninth place in the conference standings, and are just one-match behind Connecticut for the eighth and final postseason spot with four matches to play.

 

MATUSIAK DOES IT ALL

Sophomore Meghan Matusiak had arguably her finest match with SHU at DePaul last Sunday. The opposite hitter racked up 17 kills, 14 digs, a career-best six aces, and four blocks in a crucial five-set victory over the Blue Demons.

 

HANNAH LENDS HELPING HAND

Since entering the starting lineup against Louisville, Hannah Hugeback has posted double-figure kills, averaging 3.30 per set, in the last five matches. At DePaul, Hugeback set a new career-high with 17 kills and added 11 digs for her second double-double.

 

TRU-CALLING

Freshman setter Olivia Trudeau has been a solid addition to SHU this season, posting nine double-doubles on the season. In a win at DePaul, she tied her career-best with 54 assists and has hit the 50-assist mark in three-straight matches.. Trudeau is the first player other than Brittany Rahrer to reach that plateau since 2004.

 

PROGRAM MILESTONE ACHEIVED

With its victory over DePaul last weekend, Seton Hall hit the 500-win plateau. In the programs' 31st season of competition the Pirates have an all-time record of 500-509.

 

WIZARD OF OZ

Junior Sarah Osmun became just the seventh player in school history to eclipse 1,000-career kills. She has compiled 1,086 kills in just under three seasons and needs just 17 more scores to crack the top-five.
