BALTIMORE, MD. - The men's swimming and diving team combined to defeat BIG EAST rival Georgetown, 155-143, while also defeating Lafayette, 188.5-108.5, before falling to Loyola, 160-131, Saturday afternoon in Baltimore. Following the meet, the men have improved their 2009-10 record to 3-2.
In the final race of the afternoon, senior Jason Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) battled from behind to out swim Georgetown anchor Wes Going in the 400-yard relay to finish three-tenths of a second ahead of the him and earn the victory over the conference foe. Benson also added a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle to pick up important points earlier in the afternoon.
Junior Kevin Webster (Leawood, Kan.) continued his brilliant season adding to his list of top times. Prior to picking up first place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley, Webster finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a BIG EAST top time of 0:49.43
Senior captain Stan Sadovski (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also picked up important points for the Hall with a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, and fourth place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Ryan O'Shaughnessy (Coral Springs, Fla.) earned second place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley, while classmate Ian Keyser (Petersburg, N.J.) finished the 1,000-yard freestyle in second place and the 500-yard freestyle in third.
Junior John D'Errico (Syosset, N.Y.) recorded a third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, and sophomore Matt Holland (Horsham, Pa.) became the ninth male and 20th Pirate to earn a trip to the BIG EAST Conference Championships with a fourth place qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle.
In the diving events, senior P.J. Hughes (Livonia, N.Y.) finished third in the 1-meter event while sophomore Will Penny (Suffern, N.Y.) earned the same place in the 3-meter event.
The men's swimming and diving team will return home Tuesday afternoon when they face Iona at 5:00 p.m.
