SENIOR DAY AT OWEN T. CARROLL FIELD
2009 REGULAR SEASON FINALE
POSTSEASON HOPE
The Pirates find themselves still alive for a berth in the BIG EAST Championship entering their final contest of the regular season. A Seton Hall win combined with losses by Marquette in each of its final two matches (vs. Pittsburgh, @ Connecticut) would give the Pirates a 5-4 edge in divisional points, and therefore the sixth seed in the Blue Division.
MCHENRY ENTERS THE TOP THREE
Senior goalkeeper Paul McHenry has now made 240 saves to take third place in school history. He is 22 behind Steve Armenti in second place. McHenry recorded his ninth career shutout against Marquette, tying him with Ian Joyce for sixth all-time at Seton Hall.
WELKER MAKES HIS CASE
Junior Andrew Welker has proven to be one of the top offensive threats in the BIG EAST Conference and is certain to merit consideration for All-League honors. He is currently tied for first overall in the conference with 1.27 points per game and is second with 0.53 goals per game.
MULTI-GOAL GAME
With their two goals at Pittsburgh, the Pirates snapped a nine-game streak in which they failed to put multiple scores on the board. Juniors Sam Petrone and Dritan Sela both found the back of the net against the Panthers.
HARD LUCK FOR THE CAPTAINS
Junior captains Hayden Morris and Steven Rose both saw their seasons cut short due to injury. Morris managed just two appearances before being shutdown, while Rose was on his way to a strong season with two goals in five games before suffering a season-ending injury.
ZAMMIELLO GETS HIS FIRST
Sophomore midfielder Giovanni Zammiello scored his first career goal in Seton Hall's match against defending national champion Maryland.
SCORELESS DUEL
Seton Hall and Marquette played to a scoreless tie in a match with BIG EAST Championship implications. With both teams earning a point, the Golden Eagles remain in sixth place, one spot ahead of the Pirates, and in the control of the final postseason berth. Seton Hall has a chance to make a major move in the standings in its contest with Providence, which currently stands fifth with seven points, two more than the Pirates.
CAMERON'S CORNER
Junior defender Kurt Cameron picked up his first goal of the season against Georgetown, heading in a corner kick by classmate Brayan Martinez.
IRISH RALLY PAST PIRATES
The Pirates played just once last week, falling at Notre Dame, 2-1. Junior Brayan Martinez gave the Hall a lead with a 30 yard blast in the 19th minute for his first goal of the season. The Irish, however, came up with a pair of goals in the second half, including one on a penalty kick, to escape with the victory.
LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT
Trailing 1-0 to Rutgers for roughly 74 minutes, Seton Hall experienced one of its most exciting ends to regulation in recent memory. After working his way to the middle of the field from the right side, junior Andrew Welker found just enough space to shoot and score with 23 seconds left, sending the game into overtime. The Scarlet Knights, however, pulled the game out early in the second extra period.
STELLAR IN GOAL
Senior netminder Paul McHenry was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and ECAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-high 10 saves against Syracuse and shutting out #15 St. John's. He became the first Pirate make 10 saves in a game since Boris Pardo against Princeton on Oct. 1, 2003.
SELA SCORES THREE
Junior forward Dritan Sela posted a hat trick in the Pirates' 3-1 win over Syracuse, the first of his career. His performace earned him a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. It was the second straight game in which the Hall had a player score three goals, with Andrew Welker previously accomplishing the feat at Stony Brook.
WELKER PULLS HAT TRICK
Junior forward Andrew Welker notched his first career hat trick in the Pirates' 3-2 win over Stony Brook. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and picked up the BigAppleSoccer.com Player of the Week award after his performance.
LONGO GETS ONE
Junior midfielder Bryan Long scored his first career goal in the Hall's 2-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth.
ROSE ROLLS A PAIR
Junior midfielder netted a pair of goals in the Hall's loss to Princeton, including one successful penalty kick. It was the first two-goal game in the collegiate career of Rose.
BAKER ON THE BOARD
Sophomore defender Joe Baker picked up his first career point with an assist at Penn. Baker has started the first three games of the season after missing much of his freshman year due to injury.
A TOUGH OPENER
The Pirates fell at Monmouth, 1-0, in their 2009 season opener. It was the first shutout loss to start a year since 1997, when Rutgers beat the Hall, 1-0.
MARTINEZ NAME PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST
Junior midfielder Brayan Martinez earned a spot on the 2009 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team after a First Team selection in his sophomore season. Seton Hall was picked sixth in the Blue Division.
THE CAPTAINS
Head coach Manfred Schellscheidt has selected juniors Hayden Morris and Steven Rose as team captains for the 2009 season. It is the second straight season that Morris and Rose have been tabbed.
