PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seton Hall senior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) was named to the BIG EAST All-First Team; it was announced by the conference on Monday. Freshman Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) was named to the All-Rookie Team.
Laing, a Second Team All-Conference selection in 2006-07, led the Pirates to a 17-14 overall record and a berth in the BIG EAST Championship this season. The 6-foot-5 tri-captain averaged a conference second-best 19.0 points per game and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times this season. On Nov. 26, Laing was named BIG EAST Player of the Week. An NABC All-District selection, he ranked fourth in the conference in free-throw percentage (.813) and became the 34th player in Seton Hall history to record 1,000 career points. Currently, he ranks 22nd all-time with 1,307 points.
One of the conference’s marquee freshmen, Hazell made 19 starts this season and averaged 12.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Upon his arrival, he immediately became one of the biggest three-point threats in the BIG EAST. Hazell’s 77 made three-pointers and 226 attempts both rank amongst the Top-10 all-time in a single-season at Seton Hall. On January 21, he was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week following a 29-point performance in the Pirates’ upset victory over Louisville.
