Up against swimmers from six other schools, junior Kerrie Kolackovsky (Franklin Square, N.Y.) delivered the fastest time of the day in two of three individual events she entered at the Bison Invitational and finished just two-tenths of a second off the top mark in the other.
In her two first-place efforts at the meet hosted by Bucknell University, Kolackovsky established a new season-best time for the Pirates in events she competed in for the first time this year. In the 1,650-yard freestyle, she covered the mile in a time of 17:19.21, touching more than 22 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Later in the 50-yard freestyle, she set the pace with a time of 24.37, out-sprinting 65 other swimmers who competed in the event. By day’s end, the SHU junior emerged as one of just two female swimmers who claimed the top spot in multiple events.
Both marks also surpassed BIG EAST Championship automatic qualifying standards, giving Kolackovsky qualifying times in a team-high nine different events. She now boasts team-best performances in nine events as well.
Kolackovsky began the day with a time of 1:05.61 in the 100-yard breaststroke, an event in which she re-wrote her own school record earlier this season. The Franklin Square native finished just two-tenths of a second shy of adding a third first-place time on the day, placing second in the final event rankings.
In three meets since the season resumed following the winter break, Kolackovsky has turned in the fastest time in seven of the nine events she has entered and has placed among the top-two each time. For the year, she leads all Pirates with 18 first-place finishes and 27 top-three performances, and has finished outside the top-three only once all season.
With the 2013 BIG EAST Championship fast approaching, Kolackovsky ranks among the top-10 in the league in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke and will be looking to improve on last year’s performance that saw her help set two new school records in the medley relays at the conference meet.
This marks the third time that Kolackovsky has been named SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week this season, tying her with 2012 First Team All-BIG EAST selection Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) of volleyball for the most individual honors in 2012-13.
