SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (January 22, 2013)
Haralds Karlis, Men's Basketball
Inserted in the starting lineup for the first time this season, sophomore Haralds Karlis (Riga, Latvia) responded with one of the best performances of his young career as the Pirates rallied to push 25th-ranked Marquette to the brink of their first home loss of the year.
The second-year guard logged 39 minutes of action for a shorthanded SHU squad, setting a career-high in minutes played for the second consecutive game. Karlis proved he was equal to the task, delivering a career-best 14 points on an efficient 4-of-7 from the floor and 2-for-4 from downtown. The Latvia native was perfect from the field in the second half, scoring nine points to help the Pirates draw to within one point in the closing period. The 6-foot-5 swingman also stepped up to help The Hall match the Golden Eagles on the glass, snatching six rebounds to finish just one shy of his career mark set earlier this season against Longwood (12.19).
More time on the floor has led to increased assertiveness on the offensive end from Karlis. The sophomore got to the line a total of 12 times against Providence (1.13) and Marquette, converting on nine of his attempts to lead the team in both categories. Making the most of the added opportunities, he posted averages of 12.5 points and five rebounds while playing over 36 minutes per game over the recent two-game stretch.
This is the first time that Karlis has been named SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week (1.22) in his career.
