Fuquan Edwin, Men’s Basketball
Junior Fuquan Edwin (Paterson, N.J.) helped the Pirates pick up a pair of
home victories over the holiday weekend, playing his way into a spot on the BIG
EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
In a Thanksgiving eve throttling of Maine, Edwin filled the stat sheet, finishing the night with 15 points, six rebounds and matching his season-high with six steals in a 76-49 win. Against the Black Bears, Edwin found the mark on 6-of-11 field goal attempts, including a 3-for-5 mark from three-point range.
Four days later, Edwin was the driving force behind a dominant second half performance against Saint Peter’s, netting 18 of his game-high 25 points in the final frame to guide The Hall to a 76-61 victory. The Paterson native continued his hot shooting, finding the mark on 10-of-14 attempted shots, including two more makes from downtown. Edwin also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals and did not commit a turnover in 28 minutes of action.
Through six contests, last year’s national steals leader ranks among the top-10 in the country with a 3.17 steals per game average. His 19 total thefts is tops in the BIG EAST and is tied for the second highest individual total in the nation (11/27).
Early in his junior season, Edwin has emerged as an offensive force for the Pirates, scoring over 20 points on three occasions and posting a 19.7 points per game average that is fifth best in the conference. He also has greatly improved his outside shooting, ranking in the top-10 in the BIG EAST with 13 made three-pointers and a 46.4 percent three-point field goal percentage.
After playing a central role in a 2-0 week that helped the Pirates improve to 5-1, Fuquan Edwin is the SHUPirates.com Athlete of the Week for the first time this season.
