SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - On Wednesday, April 6th, Seton Hall University celebrated National Student-Athlete Day by honoring one member each team, chosen by the head coach, who exemplifies the meaning of "student-athlete." Recognition came between games of the softball double-header against St. John's.
National Student-Athlete Day, a program of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), has been celebrated annually on April 6 since 1987. National Student-Athlete Day recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, in their competitions and in their communities. It was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
Seton Hall student-athletes pride themselves on their achievements not only on the field, but also in the classroom and community. More than 140 Seton Hall student-athletes were tabbed as BIG EAST Academic All-Stars by earning at least a 3.0 grade-point average. These Pirates have also excelled in the community by participating in over 500 hours of community service for the 2010-11 academic year. Student-athletes have been active promoting school spirit at games, participating in the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and other clubs and organizations on campus, in the community working with neighboring schools through reading programs and Seton Hall's Pen Pal program, and visiting local hospitals.
This year's honorees include the BIG EAST Men's Swimming Championship's Most Outstanding Swimmer (Kevin Webster), a three-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week (Joe DiRocco), and a BIG EAST Female Scholar Athlete (Michelle Reed).
