EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.- The Seton Hall men’s basketball team opened up play with a 91-52 win over Caldwell College on Saturday afternoon. Junior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) led the way for the Pirates with 19 points on 8-13 shooting. Seton Hall had six players in double-figures and shot 53 percent from the field. The Pirates forced 31 turnovers on their way to the victory.
Freshmen Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y), Kashif Pratt (Bronx, N.Y.), and Larry Davis (Middle Village, N.Y.) all played key roles in their first game for Seton Hall. Harvey had 11 points, including 5-6 from the free throw line. He ended the game with nine assists, one shy of a double-double. Pratt had five points in 13 minutes off the bench, and Davis posted 11 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes of play.
Junior Jamar Nutter (Bloomfield, N.J) ended up with 15 points and four steals. Sophomore Paul Gause (Pittsgrove, N.J) had 14 points to go with his four steals. Senior Mani Messy (Gloucester, Ontario) put up 10 points, hitting both of his three-point attempts.
Manny Perez led the Cougars with 15 points and seven boards. Jean Georges added another 11 points for Caldwell.
The Pirates jumped on the Cougars early, going on a 15-2 run to start the game. Seton Hall extended its lead to 26-7 after another 11-3 run and went into the half leading, 38-17.
The second half started similar to the first, as the Pirates went on another 12-2 run, to extend the advantage to 50-21. With 3:17 left, Seton Hall took their biggest lead at 86-50 as they went on for the 91-52 win.
The Pirates host Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Nov. 18 at Continental Airlines Arena. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
