CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Seton Hall baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning, however it was not enough as they fell to #2 North Carolina, 10-3, on a rainy Saturday evening at Chapel Hill.
Sophomore A.J. Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) led off the ninth with walk and reached third base on a single to right field by red-shirt sophomore Frank Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.). Red-shirt senior Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) drove in Rusbarsky with an RBI groundout for their first run of the game.
After back-to-back walks to freshman Bobby Migliazza (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Chris Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) loaded the bases, Esposito scored when sophomore Sean Gusrang (Burlington, N.J.) reached on an error, and Migliazza followed on a passed ball to cut the lead to, 10-3.
North Carolina (7-1) began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single by Kyle Seager, and broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning.
After taking a, 2-0, lead on a lead-off home run by Levi Michael, his second of the season, the rain began to come down and forced the game into a delay.
Following the delay, Ben Bunting began where his team left off in the third inning with a two-run single for a, 4-0, advantage. Bunting would come around to score when Tarron Robinson reached base on an error for a, 5-0, lead.
The Pirates (2-4) had their opportunity to tie the game at one in the top of the second inning. Senior Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) led off with a walk, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Chris Spagnuolo (Tabernacle, N.J.), and third base on a wild pitch, however Tar Heels starter Matt Harvey struck out Fontenelli and Gusrang to end the inning.
Esposito, Spagnuolo, and Gusrang each had a hit to lead the Pirates, while Smedberg had the only RBI
Sophomore Joe DiRocco (East Hanover, N.J.) (0-1) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits in four innings of work. Harvey picked up the victory tossing three scoreless innings striking out five.
The Pirates return to the field when they play Albany Wednesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
