NEWARK, N.J. – On a day where Seton Hall honored its 1988-89 Final Four team, this year’s men’s basketball team played an inspired game, upsetting #12 Georgetown 65-60 on Sunday. The win was also the Pirates first BIG EAST win of the season and improved the squad to 10-9 overall.
Seton Hall received a pair of strong performances from sophomore Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) and junior Robert Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Hazell scored 23 points, converting on 13-of-17 from the charity stripe and three steals. Mitchell had 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.
A traditional three-point play by Hazell gave the Pirates a 12-9 edge with 12:17 remaining in the first half. Three minutes later, a Julian Vaughn jumper put the Hoyas on top 16-14, and Georgetown pushed the lead to seven after Jessie Sapp found Nikita Mescheriakov on the right corner with 1:11 until the break.
Mitchell scored the final six points of the half in a span of just 53 seconds to pull SHU within 27-26 at the intermission.

Sapp drilled a three-pointer to bring the Georgetown lead back up to 40-33 The Pirates cut the deficit to three, but the Hoyas converted on four straight free-throws to make it 44-37 with 12:17 to go.
After being fouled on a three-point attempt, Hazell knocked down all three from the line to jump start a 12-2 run, helping Seton Hall regain the lead, 49-46, with 7:08 on the clock.
Monroe hit a 15-foot jumper to tie the score, 50-50, and the teams traded buckets over the next three minutes. With the Pirates holding one-point lead, John Garcia (Brentwood, N.Y) started a great display of fast-break basketball. Garcia pulled down a defensive rebound and threw an outlet pass to Hazell. Hazell hit Mitchell on the left wing, and Mitchell found a streaking Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for a layup to give Seton Hall a 59-56 cushion with 3:27 left in regulation.
With the Pirates still holding a three-point lead with 1:30 left in the game, DaJuan Summers hit a pair from the charity stripe making it a 61-60 contest.

Austin Freeman missed a trifecta from the left corner with 38 seconds left, and the Hoyas were forced to foul Hazell after he picked up the loose ball. Hazell hit just 1-of-2 from the line, but another Georgetown attempt from downtown was off the mark, and the Pirates hit 3-of-4 from the foul line down the stretch to close out the victory.
Monroe led Georgetown with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and had seven rebounds.
Seton Hall played a strong defensive game holding the Hoyas (12-6, 3-4) to 32.7 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers. The Pirates also held a 14-0 advantage on fast-break points. SHU was 0-for-13 from beyond the arc, breaking a streak of 504 consecutive games with a made three-point basket.
Seton Hall will host Rutgers on January 29 at Prudential Center at 9:00 p.m.
