NEWARK, N.J. – IUPUI’s Leroy Nobles converted on a layup as time expired to defeat the Seton Hall men’s basketball team, 67-65, on Saturday night. The Pirates (8-2) trailed by five points with less than a minute left in the second half, but rallied to tie the score with nine seconds to go. Sophomore Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.)  scored a game-high 20 points.

Hazell knocked down a 40 foot three-pointer from the top of the key to make it a 62-60 game with 43 seconds to go. After the Jaguars (6-4) converted on 1-of-2 free throws, junior Robert Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a pull-up jumper from the foul-line to put SHU down by one with 32 seconds to go.

IUPUI missed two more from the charity stripe, but Nobles pulled down the offensive board and was fouled with 27 seconds. Nobles hit both foul-shots to make it 65-62. On the Pirates next possession Mitchell missed a trey from the wing, but Hazell came up with the rebound and hit a fadeaway trifecta from the corner to tie the game.

John Ashworth took the inbounds pass up to half-court and found Nobles on the wing. Nobles drove to the lane, made a spin move and threw up his last second shot with under two seconds left. The ball hit the back of the rim and hung there before falling in at the buzzer.

Jon Avery gave the Jaguars an 18-10 lead with 12:32 in the first half. Sophomore Mike Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) sparked an 11-4 run with a key blocked shot and four points to make it 22-21 at the 6:17 mark. IUPUI held Seton Hall without a point over the next five-plus minutes and took a 33-23 edge into the intermission.

The Pirates shot just 30.8 percent from the floor in the first half.

The Jaguars held off several SHU runs in the second half, but were able hold the Pirates off until the final minute of regulation.

Mitchell scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Jordan Theodore (Englewood, N.J.) added 13 points and four assists off the bench.

Alex Young led IUPUI with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Billy Pettiford scored 11 and had 10 boards.

Seton Hall shot 54.2 percent in the second half, and finished at 42.0 for the game. The Jaguars struggled from the foul line, shooting just 52.2 percent for the game. IUPUI never trailed in the game, and gave SHU its first home loss of the season.

The Pirates return to action on Monday, December 22, at James Madison. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
