NEWARK, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s basketball team held off a tough Cal-Baptist team to come away with a 92-80 triumph. The Lancers led for several minutes in the second half, but the Pirates took the win to improve to 7-1 on the season. Junior Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 25 points on his way to becoming the 36th Pirate to reach 1,000 career points in the victory.
Sophomore Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) had 25 points and a career-high seven rebounds. Senior Paul Gause (Pittsgrove, N.J.) was a menace on defense with seven steals, while adding 11 points and four assists.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Gause capped a 12-2 run to begin the action. The Lancers (8-1) bounced back to score six unanswered to make it a four-point game with 13:55 in the half.
Hazell connected with senior John Garcia (Brentwood, N.Y.) for a layup to make it 32-23 with 7:19 left until the break. Cal-Baptist put together a 13-2 run to take a two-point lead with 2:31 on the clock.
The Pirates tied the score on their next possession, and a Harvey steal and bucket jump-started an 11-3 spurt to close the half, as Seton Hall took a 45-39 advantage into the intermission.
After a Mike Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dunk gave the Pirates a 56-48 edge with 14:23 remaining, the Lancers clamped down on defense. Cal-Baptist held SHU without a score for the next three-plus minutes, and took over the lead, 59-56, with 10:58 to go.
The teams traded the lead over the next few minutes, but a Gause steal keyed another Pirate run to give the Hall a 75-68 cushion with 6:02 left. From there, the Pirates held a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
Harvey scored the Pirates’ first bucket of the half to reach the century mark with 19:15 left. The Lancers shot 53.4 percent from the floor, compared to 53.2 percent for Seton Hall. The Pirates scored 30 points off of 21 Cal-Baptist turnovers.
Robert Rose led five Lancer players in double-figures with 18 points.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, December 13, at St. Peter’s at 2:00 p.m.
