MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Freshman Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) dropped 30 points, but it was not enough as the Seton Hall men’s basketball team lost to West Virginia, 89-68. The Pirates (15-11, 5-8) have now lost five straight and are winless in the month of February.
Hazell connected on 11-of-18 shots from the floor, including six trifecta’s. Senior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) was the only other player in double figures for Seton Hall. Laing scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half, and added six rebounds.
The Mountaineers (18-7, 7-5) went ahead 7-3 to start the game, and then used a 15-2 surge midway through the half to take control of the game.
Hazell drained back-to-back three-pointers, and sophomore Larry Davis (Middle Village, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper to cut the deficit to 29-19 with 5:46 left in the period, but the Pirates were not able to pull any closer and trailed by 15 at the half.
West Virginia put the contest out of reach early in the second half by scoring eight of the first ten points to go up 53-32 with 18:05 remaining in the game, and cruised to the victory.
Da’Sean Butler and Alex Ruoff each scored 15 points for the Mountaineers, who outrebounded Seton Hall, 47-26.
The Pirates return to the court on February 23 when they welcome DePaul to the Prudential Center. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
