MILWAUKEE, WISC. – Seton Hall men’s basketball senior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) became just the 34th player in Pirates’ history to score 1,000 points finishing the night with 13 points. However, Seton Hall fell to 15th ranked Marquette, 61-56, Tuesday evening at the Bradley Center.

The Pirates (10-5, 0-2) shot 44.4% in the first half, receiving a team-high nine points from sophomore Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as they took a 31-24 lead into the locker room.  Already leading 11-9 at the 11:49 mark, Seton Hall went on an 11-0 run, with Harvey picking up six points in the span, to give his team a 22-9 lead with 6:51 remaining.  Nineteen seconds later, Wesley Matthews hit a layup for the Golden Eagles (12-2, 2-1) to begin an 11-2 run, which ended at 3:10 to cut the Pirate lead to four.

Seton Hall remained in the lead, 47-45, until the 5:58 mark of the second half when Dominic James made a layup while being intentionally fouled on the way up by Pirates senior Jamar Nutter (Bloomfield, N.J.).  With James being tended to on the sideline for an injury, the Golden Eagles summoned Maurice Acker to the free throw line to shoot for James.  Acker made both to give Marquette their first lead, 49-47, since the 17:57 mark in the first half when they led 2-1.  The foul was Nutter’s fourth personal. He would receive his fifth, fouling out with 4:13 remaining in the game.

Seton Hall cut the lead to one with Harvey scoring six straight points for the Pirates in a span of 2:14, but with Marquette leading by two with nine seconds to play, Dan Fitzgerald buried the Pirates’ chances with a three-point basket.  He finished with 12 points, including 4-of-9 from downtown.  Jerel McNeal led the way for Marquette with 14 points, while James ended with 13.

Harvey ended the game with team-highs of 18 points and three assists, while Laing fouled out in the final minute with eight rebounds in addition to his 13 points.  Nutter completed his night with nine points (3-8 from three-point range), leaving him 39 points shy of becoming the 35th player in Seton Hall history with 1,000 points.

The Pirates, who entered the game leading the BIG EAST Conference in free-throw shooting, shot just 11-18 from the line, and ended the game shooting 36.2% from the field to Marquette’s 32.8%.  Seton Hall also led the game in rebounds 43-39, and caused Marquette to turn the ball over 15 times to their 14.

The Pirates return to action Saturday, January 12 when they travel to Pittsburgh in the BIG EAST Conference match-up beginning at 2:00 p.m.  The game can be seen on MSG Network.
