Men’s Basketball Suffers First Defeat of Season, 85-70, to Saint Mary’s

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Brian Laing (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded his third double-double (22 points 10 rebounds ) of the season and ninth of his career, however it was not enough as Seton Hall was defeated by Saint Mary’s, 85-70, Saturday evening at the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif.  With the loss, the Pirates fell to 6-1 for the 2007-08 season.

 

Laing scored the first two points of the game giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead 41 seconds into the game, however Saint Mary’s went on a 13-0 run over the next 3:41 putting them ahead 13-2.  Seton Hall was never able to recover falling behind 44-30 at halftime.  Just before the buzzer Eugene Harvey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted a layup ending a Pirates drought of 5:33 without a field goal.

 

The teams played an even second half with Saint Mary’s scoring 41 points to Seton Hall’s 40.  After the Pirates fell behind 61-39 with 12:04 remaining in the half, they got as close as 61-48 following a layup by Paul Gause (Pittsgrove, N.J.) off a feed from Harvey with 10:42 left to play.  With 4:06 left on the clock, Gause knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to 10, 75-65, but Saint Mary’s did not allow Seton Hall to get any closer.

 

In addition to Laing's offensive output, Harvey scored 13 points while grabbing four rebounds, and Jeremy Hazell (Bronx, N.Y.) also finished in double-digits with 10 points.

 

Freshman Mike Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had the best game of his young collegiate career.  Davis scored a career-high six points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked a career-best six shots before fouling out. 

 

Omar Samhan led the way for Saint Mary’s with 19 points and 16 rebounds.  He shot 7-of-17 from the floor, was 5-for-5 was the free-throw line, and had 12 defensive rebounds.

 

The Pirates shot 38% from the floor to Saint Mary’s 41.3%.  Saint Mary’s won the rebound battle 47-40, and caused 13 turnovers leading to 22 points.  Seton Hall caused 11 turnovers scoring 12 points.

 

The Pirates return to the Prudential center on Tuesday, December 4 as they play Saint Peters.  Tip-off s scheduled for 7:30 pm.
