SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A 15-0 run down the stretch helped the Seton Hall women's basketball team escape against UC Davis, 58-54, on Monday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates (8-4) are off until Dec. 28 when they visit North Carolina State at 7:00 p.m.
Junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) scored a season-high 23 points, including a career-best six three-pointers, to lead the Hall. Senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) chipped in 17 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals, while sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a game-high eight boards. Haylee Donaghe paced the Aggies (7-4) with 17 points.
Williams followed an 18-foot jumper with a three-point play at the 14:59 mark as the Hall jumped out to a 9-5 lead. UC Davis answered with a three, but Williams connected from deep on the next two possessions to keep the Pirates in front.
UC Davis fought back to tie the game at 19 on two free throws from Heidi Heintz with 7:10 to play in the first half. Donaghe's three-point play with just under five minutes on the clock gave the Aggies a 22-19 edge, and Heintz later sank two more from the stripe to stretch the lead to five.
Emery hit a layup to snap a drought of six minutes and 34 seconds for the Hall, and Williams sank another three-pointer with 2:12 remaining to even the score at 24, where it would remain until halftime.
With 16:53 on the clock, Williams dropped in a three from the corner as the Pirates pushed out to a 30-26 advantage. The Aggies tied it back up a minute later after two Donaghe foul shots, but Williams responded with her fifth three-pointer of the day to make it 33-30.
Lauren Juric hit consecutive shots from beyond the arc to give UC Davis a 39-37 lead, and she added back-to-back scores in the post to extend the spread to six with 10:30 to play. The Aggies stretched it to 48-39 after a free throw from Samantha Meggison, but Emery scored on two straight Pirates' possessions to bring the Hall back within five at the 7:22 mark.
It was back to a nine-point game after a pair of free throws from Donaghe with just over five and a half minutes to go made it 52-43. Sophomore Shanai Heber (Paterson, N.J.) scored six straight for the Pirates to cut it to three, and Williams made it a 9-0 run with another three-pointer to tie the game with 3:06 left.
The Pirates went in front with 1:39 left on an Emery free throw, and her layup with 36 seconds left made it 55-52. After an empty Aggies' possession, Emery hit 1-of-2 from the line, and UC Davis turned the ball over with 9.8 seconds on the clock to give the game to the Pirates.
SHU shot 42.9 percent for the game while limiting the Aggies to just 34.6 percent. The Pirates also enjoyed a 38-30 edge on the glass.
