HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Junior Ebonie Williams (Hagerstown, Md.) buried a three-pointer with 14 seconds to left to give Seton Hall (2-0) its first lead of the night and a 53-52 victory at Marshall (0-2) on Monday night. Williams finished with a team-high 17 points to pace the Pirates.
A pair of players registered double-doubles for the Hall, as senior Nicole Emery (Baldwin, N.Y.) had 16 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore Kandice Green (Baltimore, Md.) totaled 11 points and 13 boards. Tynikki Crook posted 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Thundering Herd.
Williams dropped in a 17-footer with 58 seconds left, cutting the Herd's lead to 52-50. Following a defensive stop, she calmly used a teammate's screen and stepped back for the decisive 22-footer, hitting nothing but net. The Herd's final possession was a missed shot by Crook, and Green secured the rebound and the win.
The Pirates came out of the gate cold offensively, allowing Marshall to take an 8-2 lead before Green hit a driving lay up with 12:31 left in the first half. Down 14-7, Williams hit consecutive jumpers to cut the deficit to three at the 8:16 mark.
Williams converted a three-point play to make it a 21-17 game, but the Herd quickly pushed the lead back to eight on consecutive buckets from Kendra King. Marshall led by as many as 11 before Emery scored the half's final basket just over a minute before the half, sending the Pirates into intermission trailing 30-21.
Williams led the Pirates with nine points at the half.
The Herd went back up by 11 before a driving score from senior Ashley Booker (San Diego, Calif.) and a three-pointer for Williams made it 32-26, forcing a Marshall timeout with 17:48 left. After a three-point play from Emery, freshman Terry Green (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) buried a shot from beyond the arc to bring the Pirates to within 36-34 at the 14:37 mark.
Marshall's lead was back to five at 43-38 following an offensive rebound and score by Alyssa Hammond with just over nine minutes to go. The Pirates stayed close, cutting the lead to two on three occasions, including on a pair of free throws by Emery with 2:13 on the clock. Kandice Green made it 49-48 by hitting 1-of-2 from the stripe the next time down court, but Rashedah Henriques answered for Marshall with a deep three-pointer with 1:23 to play.
The Hall overcame a rough shooting night that saw it connect at just 36.5 percent from the floor and 52.2 percent from the line. Defensively, however, the Pirates were up to the task, limiting Marshall to 29.6 percent shooting. Seton Hal also claimed a 45-35 edge on the glass.
The Pirates take on Morgan State in the first round of the Anaconda Sports/The Rock Seton Hall Classic on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Arkansas State and Virginia Commonwealth face off in the second game of the evening.
