MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - For the first time since 1994, the Seton Hall volleyball team will be participating in the BIG EAST Championship. The Pirates won its regular season finale at West Virginia, 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 25-16, 25-13), on Sunday and received help to clinch the eighth and final seed. Seton Hall will face top-seeded Notre Dame on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Louisville, Ky.
SHU received a strong team effort in the victory and saw three players record double-doubles. Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) led the offense with 19 digs on a .341 clip and added 13 digs. Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 15 kills and 15 digs, and freshman Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) handed out 52 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) also came up clutch with 15 kills and a .429 attack percentage.
Seton Hall scored the first four points of the first set, and took a 14-7 lead after an attack error. The Mountaineers rattled off the next five scores to pull within a point, but the Pirates answered with four straight to hold a 17-13 edge and hold off the rally. West Virginia closed within two on three occasions, but SHU closed the door on a block by Matusiak and Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) to win, 25-21.
In the second, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 10-5 advantage, but the Pirates bounced back and pulled within 12-9. West Virginia proceeded to rip off an 8-2 run to create enough distance to even the contest, and win 25-17.
Seton Hall went to work early in the third, taking a 12-6 lead after a Trudeau kill. The Pirates pushed the margin to 18-9 on a Matusiak spike, and rolled to a 25-16 set victory.
An Osmun kill capped a 6-1 spurt to put SHU on top, 14-8, in the middle of the fourth set and cruised to a 25-13 win to seal the victory.
